How to calculate percentage increase

The original value is always the baseline. Dividing the increase by that baseline tells you how large the change is in relative terms.

Formula: ((new value − original value) ÷ original value) × 100

  1. Subtract the original value from the new value to find the amount of the increase.
  2. Divide that increase by the original value.
  3. Multiply by 100 to convert the decimal into a percentage.

Example: a price rises from $80 to $100

The increase is $20. Divide $20 by the original $80 to get 0.25, then multiply by 100. The price increased by 25%.

Common questions

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. For example, a rise from 80 to 100 is (20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%.

Use a focused calculator when your question needs a different baseline or a price-specific formula.
