Percentage Difference Calculator

Percentage difference compares two values when neither one should be treated as the starting point. It is especially useful for comparing measurements, estimates, test results, or prices from two independent sources.

Calculate percentage difference

Enter the two values you want to compare.

The interactive calculator loads with the page so you can enter your own values and see the result instantly.

How to calculate percentage difference

Unlike percentage change, percentage difference uses the average of both values as its reference point. This makes the comparison symmetrical: switching the two values does not change the answer.

Formula: |value 1 − value 2| ÷ ((value 1 + value 2) ÷ 2) × 100

  1. Find the absolute difference between the two values.
  2. Find the average of the two values.
  3. Divide the difference by the average, then multiply by 100.

Example: compare measurements of 98 cm and 102 cm

Their difference is 4 cm and their average is 100 cm. Divide 4 by 100 and multiply by 100. The percentage difference is 4%.

Common questions

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change uses an original value as a baseline, while percentage difference uses the average of both values. Use percentage difference when neither value is the natural starting point.

Use a focused calculator when your question needs a different baseline or a price-specific formula.
